Nintendo Power: The Magazine That Changed How We Played Games
There was a paper magazine, back before you could look up video game cheats on your phone, and it was like magic. If you were a kid with an NES or a Game Boy in the late eighties and nineties, you would have experienced the excitement of gaming during that era. It was the best way to learn how to beat the tough games. It was twenty-four years old and part of the childhood experience of many millions of people throughout North America.
A Great Beginning for Gamers
Nintendo Power first hit mailboxes in the summer of 1988. The first cover featured a clay model of Mario from the video game Super Mario Bros. Before that, Nintendo had been sending out a small club newsletter to its fans. But as the games took off, the company realized kids wanted more. They wanted bright colours, big posters, and real help with their games. The magazine was Nintendo’s way to speak directly to the players. It wasn’t just a book of ads; it was a manual that made playing games so much more fun.
Maps and Mysteries
The maps were the best part of any new issue. Back then, there were no GPS or mini-maps on the screen in games. If you played a big game like The Legend of Zelda or Metroid, you could easily lose yourself in the woods or the dark tunnels. Nintendo Power would print giant colour maps showing where every hidden door and secret item was. There was a special section called “Classified Information.” This is where they would exchange secret button codes. This is where you’d look if you wanted to start a game with extra lives or skip a hard level. It made kids feel like they had an advantage in the game.
Fun Comics & Arts
The magazine was more than just tips. There were exceptional art and funny stories you couldn’t get anywhere else. The comics are what most fans remember. “Howard and Nester” was a comic about a kid and a guy who worked for Nintendo. Later, the magazine would run long, serious comics based on games like Super Mario Adventures and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The stories added depth to the characters. Each issue came with big posters, along with the comics. Kids would tear them out and put them up on their bedroom walls to show off their favourite heroes.
The game counsellors
If the magazine was not enough, Nintendo also had a phone line. You could have called game counsellors, and they knew how to play. These people spread out every map and guide to assist kids stuck on a boss fight. Often, the magazine published the best advice from these counsellors. It fostered a community of people who wanted to win together.
The Last Chapter
Over the years, the internet has started to change how people get their news. It was way quicker to look up a code on a website than to wait for the mail. Sorry, but the last issue of Nintendo Power was published in December 2012. The cover of the last book was a lot like the very first one from 1988 as a tribute to the past.
Collectors are still hunting old issues even though the magazine has gone. It reminds you of a time when games were a mystery, and you had a friend of ink and paper to solve them with. The legend lives on in the video game world.
