PlayStation Hero project: How Sony Is Building the Future of Global Gaming

The gaming industry is a discovery business. People recall when a game altered their perception of the medium completely, coming from an unexpected source. That’s precisely the emotion that Sony Interactive Entertainment surrounds in its program, and for almost ten years it has been working to subtly redefine the source of great games. The PlayStation Hero Projects are one of the most intentional investments in gaming today and a commitment to finding and providing aid to the world’s best developers to reach the world.

Where It All Began: The China Hero Project

In 2016, Sony started its China Hero Project, knowing that China’s gaming space was full of creative potential. Original titles submitted by developers are presented to a Sony committee, and some teams get financial support, technical resources, advice from industry veterans, and support from PlayStation’s worldwide marketing system.

Stages one and two of the programs resulted in 17 released titles and seven available titles. F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch, was a Metroidvania inspired title which was also well received for its visually steampunk universe. ANNO: Mutationem, was visually stunning and a great action-RPG set within a cyberpunk landscape. Both possessed that all important ‘Chinese fingerprint’.

In 2022, the ambition was expanded in Phase 3. With a few selected titles, Sony is now directly publishing titles, and it allocates RMB 1 million per project. There are some other PS5 games that got the attention much more than Lost Soul Aside, but this one is one of the most expected titles that started with a lone developer. Convallaria is ready to go head-to-head in the world with its rollout in more than a dozen countries at the same time.

The India Hero Project, A New Creative Frontier

The India Hero Project was announced by Sony at India Game Developer Conference in May 2023. The first five titles were unveiled at the Develop India conference in March 2024. Underdogs Studio’s Mukti is an interactive narrative about the issue of trafficking. Suri: The Seventh Note takes inspiration from the classical mythology of India to create something that hasn’t been encountered by players from outside India. Each developer gets $100,000 or more of investment based on the progress of the development, and complete Sony mentoring and promotion.

The MENA Hero Project: Mapping the map

Another expansion came in August 2024 when the developers from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Tunisia and six more countries were announced for the “Hero Project” in MENA by Sony. The first set, announced in August 2025, comprises Red Bandits, a heist action-adventure game, and The Perfect Run, an action RPG with time-looping mechanics.

Why the PlayStation Hero Projects Matter

Sony’s strategy is based on one principle: “There are fundamental truths in the world and one of them is that special games come from authentic culture. This sort of discovery continues, region by region, cohort by cohort, with the PlayStation Hero Projects as the structural engine. Developers receive funding and worldwide distribution. Stories and experiences are acquired by players, which extends the medium as a whole. Each game that passes through the program comes with a certificate of authenticity: great ideas attract their audience when the infrastructure is in place to accommodate them.

Conclusion

Each of China, India, and MENA possess unique, creative voices that become PlayStation’s, and with each new cohort Sony increases its stake in the market that will drive gaming over the next 10 years. The system is built, the pipeline is expanding, and the games will come.
